outback witch house s01e12: on days like this, at times like these

Tonight was all over the place, but you loved it.

I did not know that “apricity” is the warmness of sun in winter, but I am very glad to know it. I felt like today had those vibes.

Given the kind of week(s) it’s been, I feel like I should have more to say, but I’ve said it elsewhere, and right now I’m just getting down with this stroopwafel, if we’re being fully honest.

Outback Witch House S01E09: I’m a goth in the sun

Hi. I pulled inspiration from all over the place this week, and I think the central pillars of whatever came together here were driven by the luscious novel I just finished, Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth. I’m way too tired to do it justice in any kind of review right now, but it’s definitely worth picking up if you haven’t yet.

It’s slowly but surely beginning to feel a little less hopeless ’round these parts, what with the weather changing, the days growing, and the vaccines beginning to be obtainable by… literally anyone I know. But some of us have been burned a bit too often to lean into whatever optimism the usual spring un-doldrums might produce, so we might find ourselves feeling like the songs on this playlist. Idk. That is at least how I feel, at the precipice of something maybe good but also maybe another trip and fall down the metaphoric mountain.

Molly Nilsson sings this in the song that gave us our episode title of the evening: “And you can sleep through the summer days /
I know you think I’m morbid when I say / I hope you die by my side / The two of us at the exact same time.” I’m thinking about the knowledge that comes in the warmth of those summer days – you have them and you love them and your appreciation makes them end faster than any much shorter day in the winter. The law of paradoxical intent. It’s not that dark, it’s just an observation. This show is an observation of how it feels. Not just this week, but pretty much all weeks, I think.

That’s what we’re going for, at least.

Outback Witch House s01e04: Revolutions around the sun (when the road gets too tough)

I had a birthday around the time of this show, and I’m a little late posting this because I had to borrow Chris’s computer to do it; we went away for the weekend and my new laptop hadn’t yet arrived, and the old one just needs too much life support for us to have brought it.

I’m not sure that I really set out to do anything birthday-special with this episode, but I did play a lot of songs that I just really, really like, including the Sisters’ “Under the Gun,” which is brilliant and often slips under people’s radars with that band.

The last track was inspired by S05E09 of the show Six Feet Under, which I had seen a day before this broadcast. No spoilers here, but it’s used in a cataclysmic dream sequence that haunted me for days after, even though I’d already seen the whole show over ten years ago.

I pulled the Queen of Wands reversed for this one. She’s got life blooming all over. Here in the tundra, it looks really nice.

Outback Witch House S01E03: Words are just words that you’ll soon forget

What’s there to say about this week’s show, other than that it came together at the last second? I was having a hard time compartmentalizing my life this week, still am honestly. As I said on the show, things coalesced around Econoline Crush’s “Devil You Know;” as I didn’t mention, the other cornerstone here was Laurel Halo’s “Light + Space.” I wanted to traverse the spaces I hear between those two points.

I was thinking about the amount of text I’ve written in emails in my life and how they’re the classic case of words you’ll soon forget. It would disturb me to know the word/page count. I was also thinking about some of my recurring dreams of late. One is the classic “have to go back to high school to finish some random class” dream. I also dream of: 1) Austin, Texas; 2) Roads and maps and walls; 3) Getting lost on public transit in places I don’t know yet; 4) Missing flights.

Just pulled a Tarot card at random and it’s The Hermit, reversed. Policy, disguise, unreasoned caution, concealment.

Outback Witch House S01E01: Post-Traumatic Love

Hey, folks. I’ve been doing a “pirate radio” show (i.e., using some janky streaming service to broadcast online out of my house) on Friday nights from 9-11 PM EST. I’m going to start posting playlists and past shows here, starting with today’s programme. I’ve been doing this for a month or two now, but this is the first officially recorded instance, so we’ll go with calling it S01E01. “Post-Traumatic Love” is a song by the band ACTORS that didn’t appear tonight, but this week it’s a phrase that resonates. I hope today’s OWH helps you recuperate and relax just a bit on this dead-of-winter weekend.
